Reinforce As You Go
Practice instant recall with curated vocabulary built from kanji you’ve already learned and clickable toggles. -
Test yourself
Only the kanji you forget repeatedly need extra review! Find the tough ones with the 5-day review system—then study only them in Anki for spaced repetition. -
Learn the Basics, *Then* Level Up
Phase 1 covers 2,220 characters — the full set of jōyō kanji, Japan’s official list of “regular-use” characters you’ll see in books, newspapers, and daily life.
Once you’ve locked in their meanings, head over to Phase 2 — our section for readings, writing, and pronunciation. With the exposure you’ve gained in Phase 1, you’ll build those skills in a fraction of the time.

“What about SRS?”
Yes, The Kanji Speedrun integrates with SRS!
After you’ve completed the 5-day review system for a chapter, you can download the Anki deck for that chapter to study the kanji you struggled with.
Don’t fill your deck with easy material—only review what you really need. That way, your time is always spent on what actually matters.
If you don't know what "SRS" means, you can learn about it here.
Why not just use Anki for everything?
Great question! While Anki is a powerful tool for spaced repetition, it works best after you know what to focus on. The Kanji Speedrun provides a guided, interactive system to help you learn each kanji, spot the ones that give you trouble, and practice them with a newfound context—not just study cards in isolation.
Our approach keeps you out of the "flashcard bloat" trap: only the kanji you struggle with go into Anki. You won’t waste time on endless reviews of the easy stuff. Instead, use our five-day checkbox system to find your weak spots, then download the Anki deck and suspend any cards you already know.
What else do we offer? The Kanji Speedrun gives you:
- A curated learning path with step-by-step chapters
- Friendly mnemonic stories with recurring characters (Ken & Mei)
- Cultural notes to give you a deeper understanding of each character
- Active recall toggles and printable review sheets
- Textbook, print, and handwritten fonts for each kanji
- Interactive activities like optional crosswords
These features help you actually *learn* the kanji, not just memorize them. Anki is your powerful review tool, but The Kanji Speedrun is the system that guides you all the way.
Bottom line: Use both together for best results—learn, identify, and focus here, then let Anki handle the review!
