Mnemonic
Imagine you jab a stick ( 丨, which you learned in the grapheme section) down into a pool of water. Droplets splash to the left and right—the side strokes in the kanji show WATER splashing outward!
Notice how this kanji’s stick has a little “hook” at the bottomー some kanji use this for style or to connect more smoothly with other strokes. You’ll see both straight and hooked versions as you learn more kanji.
