About this Draft
This page is part of the early access version of The Kanji Speedrun. The essentials—kanji meanings and mnemonics—are already in place and usable, but nearly every part of the page is still being polished. Some entries may contain mistakes, but please rest assured we are working hard to make revisions.
We’re sharing these drafts now so you can keep learning while we polish the full experience. If you notice something off, please don’t hesitate to let me know—it’s a huge help in improving the course!
仲
GO-BETWEEN ・ RELATION
Mnemonic
On the left is man (亻). On the right is middle (中). Imagine a person who stands in the middle of two others, helping them connect. That’s a GO-BETWEEN — someone who brings people together and builds RELATIONS.

仲 reminds you that relationships are built through people who stand in the “middle” — bridging gaps, smoothing conflicts, or simply keeping friends close.
Example Vocabulary
- 仲間(なかま) – companion, fellow
- 仲直り(なかなおり) – reconciliation, making up
- 仲良し(なかよし) – good friend, close relationship
- 仲人(なこうど) – go-between, matchmaker
- 友情の仲(ゆうじょうのなか) – bond of friendship
In the middle of friendship
仲 shows up in words about human connection: 仲間 for companions, 仲直り for patching things up, and 仲良し for those you’re especially close with.
At its heart, 仲 is about the ties that form when someone stands “in the middle” — not to divide, but to bring people together.
